Do I need prior experience?

-No. Workshops are designed to accommodate a variety of experience levels, from homeowners and enthusiasts to tradespeople and preservation professionals.

What should I wear?

-Participants should wear comfortable work clothing appropriate for construction and restoration environments. Closed-toe footwear is required. Additional recommendations will be provided prior to the workshop.

Each day combines demonstrations, discussion, and hand-on project work.

-Yes. Participants are invited to attend a complimentary cocktail reception on Saturday evening featuring beverages, light hors d’oeuvres, and opportunities to connect with instructors and fellow attendees.

Where is the training program taking place?

-The training will be conducted throughout The Castle, utilizing a variety of unique spaces, including the original Masons Lodge, the grand entry hall and ballroom, the dining room, the circa-1900 workshop, and the building’s exterior facades. The property spans approximately three acres, offering ample onsite parking and a prominent hilltop setting. Participants will also have access to a small wooded area on the grounds. Just a five-minute walk from the house are an early cemetery and a marshland woodland landscape, providing additional opportunities for exploration and learning.

How do I get there and where should I stay?

One of the unique advantages of Connecticut’s Quiet Corner is its distinctly rural, atmospheric character while still offering convenient access to major metropolitan areas such as Hartford, Boston, and Providence.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, Yale Myers Forest and Crystal Pond Park offer excellent opportunities for hiking, swimming, and experiencing the natural beauty of the region.

The Castle is also conveniently located near several charming historic towns and villages. Woodstock, home to the renowned Woodstock Academy, features the beautifully preserved Roseland Cottage, an iconic 1840s Gothic Revival residence.

The nearby Brooklyn and Canterbury area boasts an impressive collection of 18th- and early 19th-century architecture, including the historic Prudence Crandall House.

For a glimpse into Connecticut’s maritime heritage, Mystic Seaport and Stonington are both approximately one hour away and offer exceptional insights into the history and culture of New England’s coastal communities.

Just 30 minutes north in Massachusetts, Old Sturbridge Village provides an immersive living-history experience, recreating life in a traditional early New England town in a manner similar to Colonial Williamsburg.
